According to Ventus the educational programmes in classical music conservatories don't offer many opportunities for young musicians to explore career possibilities across artistic fields or outside the traditional orchestra musician profile. Despite the Vienna Declaration on Artistic Research, the rapidly developing young field faces difficulties in receiving funding in line with research in humanities and sciences. The field wants to be recognized by the Frascati Manual, published by the OECD. The manual has set its mark on what is seen as research and development and influenced the types of funded research since early 1960s. According to Fernando Galindo-Rueda, a senior economist at the OECD, the current manual does not explicitly rule out artistic research. Yet, the manual excludes artistic performance from R & D for three presumed reasons. Creative performance \"fails the 'novelty test' because it is looking for a new expression rather than for new knowledge', and is not reproducible\" (Galindo-Rueda as quoted by Matthews, 2021).","post_title":"Is it research?","post_excerpt":"","post_status":"publish","comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","post_password":"","post_name":"is-it-research","to_ping":"","pinged":"","post_modified":"2021-12-20 13:54:41","post_modified_gmt":"2021-12-20 13:54:41","post_content_filtered":"","post_parent":0,"guid":"https:\/\/anordic.org\/livingcatalogue\/signals\/is-it-research\/","menu_order":0,"post_type":"signals","post_mime_type":"","comment_count":"0","filter":"raw"},{"ID":694,"post_author":"2","post_date":"2021-07-27 14:22:01","post_date_gmt":"2021-07-27 14:22:01","post_content":"ArtsEqual Research Initiative's researchers take international human rights and the Constitution of Finland as their starting point. They argue that the opportunity to participate in the arts and culture, develop oneself and one's community through them throughout the life cycle, and express oneself freely are fundamental cultural rights. Such rights belong to everyone. The argument is defended not only by the constitutional requirement of equal treatment but also by welfare concerns: Personal encounters in art generate meaningful aesthetic experiences. More broadly, they also generate cultural inclusion. Consequently, far-reaching positive ripple effects impact people's health, wellbeing, and quality of life and increase the common good in society. The opportunity to participate in the arts is not automatically realized in society. Thus, ArtsEqual's researchers have sought to identify mechanisms of exclusion that hinder participation. The book, edited by Heidi Westerlund and Helena Gaunt, identifies the need for professional higher education to nurture the full potential of professional musicians in response to a range of future societal needs. Examples of recent developments in professional practice in music presented in the book suggest that professionalism in music and the arts is becoming increasingly open-ended and unforeseeable. In addition, the new practices often call for collaboration and multidisciplinary. The book editors advocate the need to expand the understanding of professionalism in music that helps institutions of higher arts education grasp multiple rationalities that underpin present and future professional practices in music and in the arts more generally. They are joint projects where different artists meet to explore different ways of collaborating. Thus, part of the artwork focuses on the creative process and not only the creative outcome. \r\n\r\nIn Ukjent Prosedyre (2016), the process involved each artist sending and receiving their packages with materials from the other artists' studios. This included work begun, for example, in the form of sketches and photographs. With the non-self-chosen content as a starting point, the artists each produced new works. Then the artists met for the exhibition assembly, and all the works were further developed and installed together.
